This Tutorial was built on my home computer. Which is a amd 64bit quadcore, 4gig of ddr2 ram, Nvidia gainward gtx560 Ti 2048mb GDDR5. Its running Ubuntu 10.10 amd64. In a gnome 2.32.0 environment.
First of all. Like most installations. Make sure you backup your work. I like to use a usb and a hhd backup just incase things go horribly wrong. Now once all is backed up. We must delete any program, that will interfere or conflict with blender2.6.
Now lets get into it. Open up a terminal.(press and hold control and then press f2. Then release. Once quick command is open type xterm)
|
Type these Commands |
What They do. |
|
sudo apt-get remove blender |
Removes the current blender(you will have to enter your password.) |
That will help us get a fresh copy of blender. Now we can go ahead and install blender. For this Tutorial I am using blender2.61. I went to there website and downloaded it. Here is a short-cut to the blender, that I am running at the momment.
Now if you are unsure which operating system you have. Then I suggest you do a little research. On how to obtain it. Most simplistic way. Would be to type in terminal.
My specs are.
Distributor ID: Ubuntu
Description: Ubuntu 10.10
Release: 10.10
Codename: Maverick
If your hardware and/or o-s(operating system) is different. This Tutorial might not work. And if it doesnt Just write on my facebook wall. And I will see if I can still help.
For those that want to continue and have a different version o-s. But want to keep it close to mine then. Check out this short cut link
-->blender-2.61(other o-s versions)-->
Once you have downloaded the right compatible version of blender. Go ahead and extract it.
(A)You can either navigate to the folder you install it using terminal.
If all went well. Then you can skip (b). But if you are a button press and prefer a gui.
(B)To extract by gui/interface is really simply. All you need to do is navigate to the folder where the blender-2.61-linux-glibc27-x86_64.tar.bz2 was installed. Right click on the icon and left click extract here.
Now double left click blender-2.61-linux-glibc27-x86_64 folder to open it.
Once that is opened. Simply just double click on the blender icon.
And you should be all good to go. There should be no need to add premissions to the blender file. (Unlike other programs.)
Now that is done. We want to setup a easy short-cut on the gnome panel.
Just right click on your gnome-panel. Then left click add to panel.
Once that is opened it should look like this.
Double Left click on Custom Application Launcher. You should see a window open up like the image below.
If you double left click on the icon on the left(shown in the above image). You can then browse to the icon of your choice. Here is the icon that I have made.
Now once the icon is done. Lets add a name(what ever you want to call it). Then left click browse and find your blender folder and double left click on blender file. Fill in the comment. You should have something close to the image below.
If everything looks the way you would like it. Left click OK. and close other windows. Test to see if it worked. Should get the same result as in the below image.
The reason I dont use the original blender in the repositories. Is because it is outdated. And have had issue in the past with blender 2.49.(from random graphics bugs. To not rendering properly.)
THATS IT!!! HAPPY 3D MAKING!!!
